The Best Homemade Flour Tortillas

This recipe for the best homemade flour tortillas is so easy to follow! Probably the best tortillas I’ve ever had!

I’ve been wanting to try and make the best homemade flour tortillas for a while now. But I kept thinking it would be too hard, or I would somehow mess them up.

Boy, was I wrong! Not only were these easy to make, but they were also pretty fun to make! It was a pretty neat process. A little bit of waiting time, but easy peasy. It was totally worth the waiting!

The ingredients are so basic and simple too. Nothing crazy, or difficult.

Flour, baking powder, salt, vegetable oil, and warm water are the ingredients that make these delicious tortillas!

Just like with any bread, you usually have to let the dough sit for a bit. Yeast or no yeast. For those scientific baking reasons, bread dough has to sit!

When you knead this tortilla dough, it will become this beautiful, silky smooth dough that should be super easy to work with!

The best part and scariest part of this recipe was rolling the dough balls out into a somewhat, circular shape. Which worked out great! Of course, none of the tortillas were a perfect circle. But I kinda liked it that way. The imperfection gave them character! And that homemade look…

I was amazed at the elasticity of this dough! I rolled it out super thin, and it didn’t break or tear! The trick to non stick is keep using flour when rolling your dough balls out!

When it was time to cook the tortilla dough, I thought for sure thats when everything would go down hill. I thought the dough would stick to the counter, and I wouldn’t be able to lift it up without breaking it.

Well, I was wrong, again. It lifted off the counter with no problem (thanks to the vegetable oil thats mixed in the dough) and I plopped it right onto the sauté pan, no problem!

This was the fun part! Watching the dough turn into this perfectly cooked tortilla!

Each tortilla took about 30 seconds total! So so cool!

Look at those beautiful brown spots! Perfect!!

If you make these tortillas, I hope you enjoy! Make sure to leave a comment and star rating down below. I’d love to hear feedback from you!

  • Divide dough into 10 equal portions and roll into balls. Transfer to a plate and cover with plastic wrap. Let sit for 10 minutes.

  • Lift rolled out tortilla and place in preheated pan. Cook for about 20-30 seconds on one side, until dough starts to bubble. Flip over and cook for another 15-20 seconds on the other side. You don't want to over cook the tortillas, which will cause them to be too dry.
  • Place cooked tortillas on plate. If using the tortillas right away, there is no need to heat them up.
  • You can store these tortillas in an air tight container at room temperature for a few days, or freeze for a few months!
  • Enjoy!
