Green Bean Bake

Green bean bake is a 1950s inspired side dish, which is what we call green bean casserole these days! Loaded with green beans, creamy mushroom soup and French fried onions.

I’m sure you’ve heard of green bean casserole before. Or green bean bake, as they would call it in the 1950s. Maybe you love it, maybe you hate it. It’s a very controversial side dish.

Green bean bake was created in 1955, by a very well known soup brand, Campbells. Easy, convenient foods were becoming more popular in the 1950s like canned vegetables, canned soups, instant jello/pudding, etc.

Naturally, I had to use the original brand for this recipe! It was only right.

I think I’ve had green bean casserole may once or twice in my entire life. It was just ok to me. It definitely wasn’t one of my favorite sides. But I also didn’t hate it.

To be completely honest, it isn’t the most appealing recipe, look wise. At least before its cooked.

This was my first time ever making green bean casserole. I quickly realized why its a popular side dish around the holidays. Its quick and easy. And cheap to make!

I’m sure there are tons of recipes for green bean casserole. Different ways to make it, more ingredients added, spices for extra flavor. But I wanted this recipe to be as close to a recipe from the 1950s!

I do have to say, this recipe in particular was actually pretty tasty, being as simple as it is!

  • 1⅓ Cups French fried onions, divided

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°.
  • In a 1½ quart casserole dish ( I had to use a pie dish because I don't have that size casserole dish) stir together soup, milk, soy sauce, pepper and 2/3 cups of fried onions.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes.
  • Sprinkle remaining onions on top.
  • I put my casserole back in oven for a minute or two and put broiler on low heat to give the onions a nice golden brown color and crunch. This is totally optional.
  • Enjoy!
