I’m sure you’ve had a scone before, or have at least heard of scones. But have you ever had heart shaped scone?! These adorable heart shaped strawberry scones will win your heart, and taste buds!
They are super soft and buttery. Chunks of sweet strawberries give them the perfect sweetness. For even more sweetness, sugar crystals are sprinkled on top!
Valentines day is coming up, and I know its a holiday that people either like or dislike. I like Valentines day, and always have. I like the festive colors, like the different shades of pinks and reds. The candy selection that comes out in stores too. Can’t complain there! Who doesn’t like receiving a big box of chocolates?! Whether someone else gets it for you, or you get it for yourself. Everyone deserves a sweet treat on valentines day!
I have made numerous dinners and desserts for Valentines day. But I have never made a breakfast item for Valentines day! These would be the perfect sweet treat to make for those people who are special to you in your life. Friends, family, significant others, whoever!
They are so simple to make. All you need are a few ingredients that you most likely already have. And a heart shaped cookie cutter, of course!
Macerating your strawberries is your first step. “What is macerating” you ask? Macerating strawberries is when you mix them with sugar to break them down and make them soft. It also brings out the liquid in the strawberries, to make a sweet syrup!
Strawberries are already a nice sweet treat, but they can sometimes be a little tart. So you want to make sure you do this step, that way your scones aren’t too bland, and tart. No one wants that.
Another important step to this recipe is making sure that your butter is cold, and cut into cubes!
It’s a pretty well known step when making most pastries. Most pastries have flaky, buttery dough. When you have small chunks of cold butter throughout your dough, the butter creates steam during the baking process when it melts down. And that steam expands between the layers of dough, creating pockets of air, resulting in flaky dough!
When mixing, or cutting your cold butter into the flour mixture, it obviously isn’t going to mix smoothly into the flour like your typical cookie dough. It’s ok though, thats exactly what you want.
Things will start to come together as soon as you add your vanilla and milk to your mixture!
I know we added sugar to the strawberries to create a sweet syrup. But you want to place your strawberries in a strainer and strain out that liquid that they have been sitting in. Only because it will make your dough super soggy and sticky if there is excess liquid. No worries, your strawberries will still be plenty sweet!
You want to make sure you flour a flat surface very well with flour. Your dough WILL be sticky and wet from the strawberries. Some kneading and flour will help draw some of that liquid out.
They are just so cute and festive!
Once again, I made the horrible decision of making a buttery baked good when I’m home alone and have no one to share them with! I literally have no control when it comes to sweets or baked goods.
If you end up making these scones, I hope you enjoy them!
