Baked Marinated Mako Shark Steaks

Shark is definitely under appreciated when it comes to fish. This baked mako shark recipe will have you appreciating shark a lot more! It is so tender, and bursting with flavors. It has a similar texture as salmon, but shark is a little more dense and meaty when it comes to texture and flavor.

I never thought to try shark. never wanted to. The thought of eating a shark was just plain weird. I would always stick to my go to and known fish’s like, salmon, haddock, and shellfish. But wow, am I glad I tried shark!

My husband wanted to try it, so we picked some up at the market, did some research on how to cook shark, and it is amazing!

It flakes just like salmon and haddock. It is nice and tender, and has a nice dense meaty flavor.

Shark is so easy to cook too. You can marinate it like I did, or spread some olive oil on top with some spices. Shark already has a lot of flavor naturally so not much is needed to make it taste amazing.

For this recipe I made a marinade, and marinated the shark steak for a half an hour. 15 minutes each side.

For the marinade I used rice vinegar, fresh parsley, clove of garlic, black pepper, soy sauce, and lemon juice. So simple, and so tasty!

Put in the fridge to marinate for 30 minutes. Turning over halfway through.

Once 30 minutes is up, bake shark in preheated oven for 10 minutes per inch of thickness. My shark steak was pretty thick, I would say they were about an inch thick, so I baked mine for 10 minutes.

You want to make sure you don’t bake for too long, otherwise the texture will be tough and rubbery.

When its done, it should flake off easily like haddock and salmon.

Notes

Shark is not as good when it is over cooked. Make sure you don't over cook it.
Estimate and go by the thickness. Mine was about an inch thick so I cooked it for 10 minutes. If your shark steak is thicker than an inch and more like 2 inches, than it would cook for 15-20 minutes.
Shark is done when it flakes off easily like salmon and haddock.
