French Onion Shredded Chicken

This French onion shredded chicken recipe is for onion lovers! Chicken is slow cooked in a pool of sweet, caramelized onions, herbs and sauces! The flavors of this dish were incredible!

Ingredients
  

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 medium sweet onions, diced
  • 1 lb. chicken breast or tenders
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt + more to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar - for caramelizing onions
  • 1/4 cup steak sauce
  • 2 tablespoons worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • rice or grain of choice to serve with
  • chives or green onions for garnish (optional)

Instructions
 

  • First you want to caramelize the onions. In large sauté pan over medium-high heat, add olive oil, chopped onions and 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar. Stir around occasionally and cook for about 15 minutes, or until onions start to turn brown.
  • In slow cooker, add chicken broth, chicken breast or tenders, thyme, black pepper, salt, garlic powder, steak sauce, worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, sour cream and caramelized onions.
  • Cover slow cooker and cook on HIGH heat for 2-3 hours or LOW heat for 4-6 hours.
  • When done, take chicken out and shred with fork. Put chicken back in slow cooker and mix around. turn heat to warm and keep uncovered to help thicken everything up.
  • Cook your grain of choice, and serve chicken on top!
